Knife

When the magazine runs dry, the blade still bites.

Knife

The Knife is a recurring basic melee weapon across the Wasteland franchise, appearing in multiple entries from the original 1988 title through Wasteland 3 and beyond. As one of the lightest and most universally accessible weapons in the series, it serves as a starting or fallback option for Deputy of the Desert (DC) operatives who find themselves without ammunition or who prefer close-quarters combat in the irradiated ruins of the American Southwest.

Lore & Background

In the shattered world of Wasteland, where the water supply of the American Southwest was poisoned decades earlier, a simple knife is one of the few tools that never jams, never needs a spare part, and never runs out. For the DCs—Deputies of the Desert—sent out into the irradiated badlands to scavenge, negotiate, and fight, the knife is the last honest edge before the hand itself becomes the weapon. It is the blade a new recruit grips for the first time, the tool a veteran reaches for when the radio crackles with a warning and there is no time to cycle a round.

In Their Own Story

The dust had settled on the hood of the DC's truck, a fine orange film that made everything look like it was underwater. She'd lost the last of her 9mm rounds three miles back, trading them to a kid with a broken leg and a better story than she had. Now the road ahead was empty except for the silhouette of something that shouldn't be standing in the middle of the highway. She set the truck in park. Unclipped the knife from her thigh rig—the old combat blade, notched at the tip from a fight in the Salt Flats. The blade caught the low sun and threw a thin line of light across the dashboard. She stepped out. The figure turned. The knife went up. Neither of them spoke. In the Wasteland, that was enough.

Reader's Guide

Function & Stats: The Knife is a one-handed melee weapon requiring no ammunition. It deals low physical damage compared to firearms but is extremely lightweight, making it ideal for characters who need to minimize encumbrance. It can be equipped by any DC regardless of class or specialization. Obtaining: Knives appear as starting equipment for new DCs in several entries, can be looted from enemy corpses, found in supply caches and civilian structures, or purchased from traders. In Wasteland 3, multiple knife variants are scattered across the map, including in New Austin, the surrounding ruins, and settlement storage. Best for: Any character in a low-ammunition situation or as a silent-kill backup. Ranged-focused DCs benefit most from carrying one as a safety net. In Wasteland 3, the lightweight profile makes it useful for fast-moving characters who cannot afford the weight of a secondary firearm. Version notes: The knife concept appears in the original Wasteland (1988) as a basic melee option, continues through Wasteland 2, and is expanded in Wasteland 3 with multiple named variants. Wasteland 4 continues the tradition of knives as accessible early-game melee tools. Specific damage values and variant names shift between titles.
