Water Canister
In the wasteland, a full canister means another day alive.
The Water Canister is a basic survival consumable found across the Wasteland post-apocalyptic RPG series. In a world where nuclear war has shattered infrastructure and contaminated much of the remaining water supply, a sealed canister of clean water is one of the most universally valuable items a scavenger, soldier, or settler can carry. It serves as both a restorative drink for characters suffering from dehydration or injury and, in some titles, a tradeable commodity in settlements where clean water is scarce. The item appears in multiple entries in the series, including Wasteland 2 and Wasteland 3, developed by inXile Entertainment. While its exact presentation and mechanical role shift slightly between titles, its core function remains the same: keeping a character alive in an environment where thirst is as lethal as any raider or mutant.

Lore & Background
Before the bombs fell, water was a utility—something that came out of a tap, something you never thought about. In the decades since, that assumption has been erased. The Wasteland series depicts a North America where nuclear strikes, chemical fallout, and the collapse of municipal systems have turned clean water into a strategic resource rivaling ammunition. Settlements hoard it, trade it, and wage small wars over it. A Water Canister, sealed and undiluted, represents a small pocket of the pre-war world: a guarantee that the next few hours will not end with a character collapsing from thirst on a cracked highway. In the narrative context of the series, water management is woven into the broader survival mechanics. Characters who go too long without hydrating suffer penalties to health, stamina, or combat effectiveness. The canister is the most portable and straightforward way to counteract that, and it is one of the first items a new player learns to scavenge, purchase, or requisition from a base. Its simplicity is part of its narrative weight: in a genre full of exotic weapons and mutated horrors, the most important thing in your inventory is often just a metal container of liquid. Across the titles, the canister also functions as a social and economic marker. In Wasteland 2, water can be bought from vendors in settlements like Mojave Crossing or Highpool or traded with other factions. In Wasteland 3, water is used for crafting, trading, and survival, and its presence or absence in a settlement's inventory can signal the health of that community.
In Their Own Story
The sun hammered down on the cracked asphalt of Interstate 80, turning the air into a shimmering wall of heat. Kowalski wiped grit from his eyes and checked the canister on his hip one more time. Two liters. Maybe three. Enough for the next six hours if he conserved, not enough to make it to the next settlement with anything to spare. He'd traded a working radio for it at the last outpost. The trader hadn't even blinked. In this world, a working radio was a curiosity. Water was oxygen. He cracked the seal, tilted the canister, and let a careful stream run over his cracked lips. It tasted of metal and plastic and, beneath that, something almost like the old world. He capped it, slung it back over his shoulder, and walked on. The horizon was empty. The canister was not.

Function & Stats\nThe Water Canister is a single-use (or limited-use) consumable. When a character drinks from it, it restores hydration and removes or mitigates any active dehydration penalty. In Wasteland 3 it also contributes to the base's water stockpile if returned to the DeLorean. It carries no offensive stats; its value is purely survival and utility.\n\nObtaining\nWater Canisters are among the most commonly found items in the series. They can be looted from civilian locations, purchased from settlement vendors, found in supply caches, or acquired as quest rewards. In Wasteland 3, water can also be produced or collected at the base. In Wasteland 3 it is integrated more deeply into base management and settlement diplomacy, reflecting the shift toward a management-heavy gameplay loop. The core drink-to-hydrate mechanic is consistent across both.
