Ghouls

Twisted by the blast, they are the war's living monument crawling out of the irradiated sand.

Ghouls

Ghouls are a recurring type of mutated human encountered across the Wasteland franchise. Born from the radiation fallout of the nuclear war that destroyed modern civilization, they are deformed, often feral survivors who populate the irradiated zones of the wasteland. They are not a single organized faction with a named leader so much as a widespread biological consequence of the apocalypse, appearing as hostile encounters, camp-dwellers, and background threats to the player's squad of DeLores.

Lore & Background

In the Wasteland world, the nuclear exchanges of the late 20th century did not simply kill; they mutated. Ghouls are the long-term biological legacy of that radiation—humans whose bodies were warped by sustained exposure in the years and decades after the bombs fell. They range in severity: some are barely more than skeletal, shambling things drawn to flesh and warmth, while others retain enough cognition to scavenge, hoard, and set crude traps. They tend to cluster in the most irradiated pockets of the landscape, building small, squalid camps from whatever debris the old world left behind.

In Their Own Story

The radio crackled with static as the DeLore crested the ridge. Below, in a crater still glowing faintly green, a Ghoul turned its head. Its jaw hung loose, teeth blackened, and it let out a wet, rattling sound that was almost a laugh. The driver killed the engine. Through the windshield, the creature shuffled toward a pile of rusted cars, dragging something it had been chewing on. The DeLore sat in silence for a long moment before the driver whispered, 'Same as every other day out here.' They drove on, but the sound followed them down the ridge—wet, patient, and hungry.

Reader's Guide

Ghouls are not a squad member or a named NPC; they are a type of hostile you will encounter repeatedly across the Wasteland series. In Wasteland 1, they appear as standard combat encounters in the desert, often guarding irradiated zones or scavenging camps. In Wasteland 2, they populate specific desert locations and can be fought or avoided depending on your approach. In Wasteland 3, they carry over into the Colorado setting, serving the same role as a baseline hostile in uncharted or irradiated areas. Combat-wise, Ghouls are typically low-to-mid threat: fast, numerous, and sometimes resistant to certain damage types due to their mutated physiology. They do not wield advanced technology, so they rely on numbers, terrain, and sheer feral aggression. Stealth can be a viable alternative to direct combat, especially in Wasteland 2 and 3 where the cover system makes flanking or sneaking past Ghoul camps a practical option. There are no major branching story choices centered on Ghouls the way there are for organized factions. They function as environmental hazards and combat encounters rather than quest-givers or moral dilemmas. Their role is to establish the tone of the wasteland: the war is over, but its biological consequences are still walking around, still hungry, still dangerous.
